Remembering God’s Presence This Christmas
The Christmas season brings many emotions. We’re excited to spend time with family and friends. We become stressed over social activities, finances, tight schedules, and travel plans. We may experience loneliness or grief, perhaps caused by the loss of a loved one or a breakup. We feel joy as we celebrate the birth of Christ. No doubt—Christmas is a mixed bag. But through all the emotions, one thing is constant: God is with you.
Have you ever heard the name for God, Immanuel? It’s a title given to Jesus and often used during the Christmas season. It means: God with us. What a thought! God is with us. He isn’t far away looking down but in the trenches of our lives. He’s involved in the nitty-gritty details. He counts our every tear and is present for every moment of joy.
Christmas is a special opportunity to remember this truth about God and how He draws near to us through Jesus.
In Matthew 1:21–23 (ESV), the angel Gabriel announces the birth of Jesus to Joseph, Mary’s betrothed:
“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel.”
At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the moment when the very presence of God took on flesh and walked with humans.
