Self-Help: Can We Really Help Ourselves?
You may have noticed a rise in the self-help genre in recent years. Everywhere we turn, books, podcasts, and social media accounts are dedicated to helping us think better, feel better, and live better with an easy fix or five-step program. We’re drawn to this type of content in the hope of self-improvement—reaching our goals, managing our relationships, or growing in self-confidence.
These are all worthy desires and important parts of healthy and full lives. And self-help is a useful place to start. This genre can be full of practical and insightful tips for forming habits and taking needed steps to build the lifestyle we want.
A problem arises, however, when self-guided improvement is where we stop. It emphasizes that the power of changing our ways and living a happy, fulfilled existence is found deep within ourselves through our own strength. But can we really help ourselves?
Our world is lonelier, sadder, and more disconnected than ever. If self-guided improvement is all we need, where are the joy-filled lives that we’ve been promised?
There is a book that offers the wisdom to build a meaningful and fulfilling life. But it’s not self-help. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. This book guides us to realize our need for a Savior, deny ourselves, and give our lives to others. Its wisdom encourages us to rely on the help of someone else rather than trying to help ourselves. And it’s the most popular book in the world—the Bible.
